New Program at Hastings College Appoints Intern to Westminster

Hastings College has been undergoing a religious revolution. A few years ago, the college received a grant from the Lilly Foundation to develop a program in religious studies. This program is aimed at giving people the background in Bible, theology and spirituality that would prepare them to work in local churches. The program began with four applicants, and in its second  year, it had over 40 applicants.

An important component in that program is helping the students get "hands-on" experience working in churches through summer internships. This came at a time when we have been looking for ways to strengthen our historic mission and education  ties to this Presbyterian College. When the college contacted me to see if we were interested, I could hardly say, "Yes!" fast enough.

On behalf of the session, I am pleased to announce that our first Hastings College summer intern will be Ann Phelps. Ann will be with us for the summer months, helping lead programs and learning about life in Nebraska’s largest Presbyterian church.

Ann Phelps comes from Hastings, where her father is a professor at the college.  In the new program she has developed her own program of studies in Theology and the Arts. She is an outstanding student and was recently honored as one of only 70 students nationwide to be named an Undergraduate Fellow by the Fund for Theological Education.

She has a particular interest in spirituality and the arts. She will be involved in a wide range of experiences here at the church, and plans to offer some adult education classes. She is interested in working with us in discovering styles of emerging sacred music, and is planning on offering classes in stained glass making and ceramics.

My special thanks to Hastings College for sending her to us and covering the costs, to Professor Trace Hawthorne for helping make the connections, and to the Personnel Committee for helping to secure her position here. She is eager to experience life  at Westminster. On behalf of the congregation, welcome Ann!
