Seminary President Samuel Calian Preaching and Teaching July 16th

We have a special event coming this summer. Dr. Samuel Calian will be preaching and teaching on July 16th.

Samuel Calian served as President of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary for 25 years, and retired this year.  During his 25-year tenure, the endowment of PTS skyrocketed from $9 million to $160 million. Enrollment  more than doubled in the oldest seminary in the Presbyterian church. Pittsburgh Seminary now has the seventh largest endowment of 250 seminaries in the United States and Canada.

In one article, the writer playfully says, "Admirers say he radiates such enthusiasm for Pittsburgh Theological Seminary that he inspires generosity. His critics say he’s so persistent that people give to make him go away." (Ann Rodgers, post-gazette.com)

Dr. Calian has researched and spoken on the future of the Presbyterian church. Given his leadership on the seminary level, it is clear he has some important insights to share with the church. You are invited and encouraged to hear both his morning sermon at 8:00 or 10:30 and his adult education class at 9:00.

Stained Glass Workshop
July 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, 25, 6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
In the Art Studio in Faith Village

Summer intern Ann Phelps will direct a stained glass workshop throughout July. As a student of Theology and the Arts, Ann is interested in how theological ideas can be experienced through the arts. Workshop
participants will have opportunities to discuss their ideas while they take part in the creation process.
Explanations of common symbols used in Christian stained glass will be provided, as well as options to discuss ideas of scholars, artists, and others who have taken part in the creation process, particularly using glass. Accompanying Ann on occasion will be church members who have had experience with stained glass, as well as Dr. Dan Deffenbaugh, Professor of Religion at Hastings College. Workshop participants can drop in at their leisure, and they will leave with a beautiful window that they have designed and created, and an enriching and enlightening experience.
