The Fish, in times of oppression against the
church, came to be a symbol for Jesus. This comes from the names for
Jesus (Jesus, Christ, God, Son, Savior), the first letters of which,
in Greek anagram, spell the word Greek "fish." The symbol of the
fish was a secret sign identifying Christians in th early Church. It
also reminds us of Christ's call to the disciples to feed the hungry
in the miracle of the loaves and fishes. And it symbolizes Christ's
call to the disciples to become fishers (saviors) of human beings.
