John, author of the fourth gospel is pictured without a beard. The other three gospels are called "synoptic gospels" from the word meaning "one eye" because their viewpoint was taken to be so similar. John's gospel is different, new and fresh, so John is pictured as a young man, looking up to the Light of the on-going new creation in Christ.
